Constable found hanging in toilet of Jatrabari police outpost
Police have recovered the hanging body of a constable named Shafiqul Islam, 42, from the toilet of a police outpost under Jatrabari police station in the capital.
The body was recovered from the washroom on Wednesday afternoon, January 28, and later sent to the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Shafiqul Islam hailed from Mautupi village under Matlab North police station in Chandpur district. He joined the Bangladesh Police in 2003 and is survived by two sons and one daughter.
According to police sources, officers recovered the body after receiving information in the morning. After completing legal formalities, the body was sent for post-mortem examination. Preliminary assessment suggests he may have taken his own life due to mental distress and depression.
Police said that on the night before the incident, Shafiqul Islam sent a text message from his eldest daughter’s mobile phone saying, “I could not do anything for you. Please forgive me. Take care of Junaid and Jihad.” His daughter tried calling him multiple times afterwards but received no response.
Officer-in-charge of Jatrabari police station Mohammad Raju said Shafiqul Islam had been suffering from mental depression for a long time and had received medical treatment. Initial findings indicate that the incident may be linked to his mental condition.
