Teenager arrested over construction worker's death in car accident in Baridhara

Police has shown a 16-year-old teenager who was in the driver’s seat of the car at the time of the incident as arrested in the case filed in the incident of construction worker Mehedi Hasan, 24, being killed under the crush of a private car in Baridhara of the capital.

Earlier he had been released in the custody of his uncle after finishing the interrogation without making him an accused in the case. Later he was taken into custody again and shown as arrested in the case by claiming that his involvement was found in the investigation.

Inspector (Investigation) of Gulshan police station Ismail Hossain confirmed the matter in the afternoon on Wednesday (September 23).

Construction worker Mehedi Hasan was taking rest sitting on the footpath of Road No 1 of Baridhara Diplomatic Zone around 5pm on Tuesday. At this time a high-speed private car lost control, climbed onto the footpath and crushed him. The local people rescued Mehedi from under the car and took him to Kurmitola General Hospital where the doctor declared him dead.

The house of the deceased Mehedi Hasan is in Sonaray village under Domar upazila of Nilphamari.

After the accident the people present detained that teenager who was in the driver’s seat of the car. Later the police took him into custody and interrogated him. However at that time he was released in the custody of his uncle without making him an accused in the case.

In this incident elder brother of Mehedi Moktadir Islam, 28, filed a case at Gulshan police station under the Road Transport Act as the complainant. The name of the teenager who was in the driver’s seat of the car was not mentioned in the case. Rather a person named Akash Mark, 44, was made an accused as the driver of that car. He has been absconding since after the incident.

Amid the discussion and criticism over the incident the police took that teenager into custody again.

Assistant Commissioner of Gulshan Zone of DMP Shah Mostafa Tariquzzaman said the teenager who was in the driver’s seat at the time of the incident has been taken into custody and shown as arrested in the case. Earlier he had been released in the custody of his uncle after finishing the interrogation. At that time he had been informed that he would have to appear if called when necessary.

He said later he has been shown as arrested as his involvement was found in the investigation. He will be sent to the court.

Police informed that the other accused of the case Akash Mark is absconding. The accident-affected car has also been seized.

It has been learnt from police sources that that teenager is a student of ‘O’ Level of an English medium school of Gulshan. His father Abbas Ali Sharif is a captain of Biman Bangladesh Airlines. The accident-affected private car is registered in the name of his mother.

Meanwhile a video of the accident has spread on social media. In the video it is seen that the car stops after hitting a street light pole after crushing Mehedi who was sitting on the footpath. After that two persons come out of the car. One of them is seen getting down through the door beside the driver.

Later the local people came to the spot, detained that teenager and handed him over to the police.
