A Supreme Court lawyer filed a contempt of court petition in the High Court against Md Sarjis Alam, chief coordinator (north) of the National Citizen Party (NCP), over a Facebook post critical of a recent court order.

The petition was filed on Wednesday with a High Court bench consisting of Justice Fahmida Khatun and Justice Mubina Asaf.

Advocate Md Jasim Uddin filed the petition, requesting the court to issue a contempt rule against Sarjis over a comment he made in a verified Facebook post on May 22.

The complaint accuses Sarjis of posting a 'disrespectful' and 'contemptuous' comment about the High Court on Facebook on May 22.  The petitioner has requested the court to take action against him.

Earlier, on May 24, Advocate Jasim Uddin issued a legal notice to Sarjis, demanding an apology for his remarks about the court. Speaking to the media, Jasim Uddin said, "As he failed to offer an apology, a contempt of court petition has been filed against Sarjees Alam in the High Court."

On May 22, the High Court dismissed a writ petition seeking to bar Ishraque Hossain from taking oath as the mayor of Dhaka. In response to the verdict, NCP leader Sarjis Alam posted on Facebook, "If a mob can influence a High Court verdict, then what’s the point of having this High Court?"
