Content creator Touhid Afridi shown arrested in fraud case
Content creator Touhid Afridi, son of My TV Chairman Nasir Uddin Sathi, has been shown arrested in a fraud case filed with Wari Police Station in the capital.
The Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasan Shahadat's court in Dhaka passed the order on Monday, June 15, following a police application. State prosecutor Advocate Harun Or Rashid confirmed the matter.
Earlier, the investigating officer of the case, Wari Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Mahfuzur Rahman, produced the accused before the court and applied to show him arrested in this case. The application stated that during the investigation, another suspect, Nishaduzzaman Nishad, was interrogated, revealing Touhid Uddin Afridi's involvement in the case. Showing the accused as arrested was essential for the investigation.
State prosecutor Advocate Syed Golam Murtaza Ibn Islam argued in favour of the arrest. The defence lawyer, Iqbal Mahmud Shovon, opposed the application. After hearing both sides, the court granted the application to show him arrested in the case. He was subsequently sent to jail.
According to the case statement, on January 13, 2025, an online fraud ring contacted the complainant via WhatsApp and Telegram, luring him with a job offer. They then encouraged him to invest money in stages. After initially returning small amounts to gain his trust, they gradually extracted larger sums. A total of Tk 2.35 lakh was embezzled from the victim after being promised returns with profit. The complainant, Sayeda Ashfah Tohua Duti, filed a case with Wari Police Station against unnamed individuals.
It is noteworthy that Touhid Afridi was arrested by CID police from Barishal on August 24 last year. He was later shown arrested and taken on remand in several cases related to the anti-discrimination movement.
