A contractor and his associates have been accused of chasing a sub-assistant engineer of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) with bamboo for questioning the quality of work in Nabinagar upazila, Brahmanbaria.

The incident took place on Monday afternoon, April 13, in the Shibpur area of the upazila. The victim engineer has filed a written complaint with the police station.

According to the victim and local sources, construction of a retaining wall is underway on the road from Shibpur to Merkuta in Nabinagar upazila under the supervision of LGED. The contractor firm is M/S Lokman Enterprise. However, local residents alleged that substandard materials were being used in the construction. Sub-assistant engineer Tarikul Islam visited the site on Monday afternoon to inspect the work quality and confirmed the allegations.

When he questioned the work quality, an argument broke out. At one point, contractor Lokman and his associates lost their temper and chased engineer Tarikul with bamboo to beat him.

A video of the incident has spread on social media. Engineer Mirza Md Tarikul Islam said, "During the argument over work quality, the contractor and his associates chased me to beat me. I somehow managed to escape by running away."

When contacted for comment over the allegations, contractor Lokman Hossain's phone number was found switched off.

Nabinagar Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Mahmudul Hasan said the contractor's associates chased the engineer with bamboo to beat him. Police arrived at the scene after receiving information but no one from the contractor firm was found there. Necessary action will be taken in this regard as per rules.
