Controversy over ‘transgender’ inclusion in student body ends in expulsion
A controversy has erupted in Kasba Upazila after a member of a college unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal was expelled following criticism over their inclusion in the committee.
The dispute arose after the 51-member committee of Syedabad Ideal College unit was announced, where Redowan Islam was appointed cultural secretary.
Allegations later surfaced that the individual had identified as male in the submitted biodata, while reports claimed a gender transition had taken place.
Amid growing local backlash, the district unit of Chhatra Dal issued a statement on Sunday (April 5), signed by joint convener Mamun Khan, announcing the expulsion.
Member secretary Samir Chakraborty said the decision was based on inconsistencies in the submitted information and alleged concealment of identity.
In a video message, Redowan Islam defended the inclusion, stating it was based on long-standing involvement in cultural activities. “My qualification and work were the basis of my selection. Whether I am male or female should not be the main issue,” the statement said.
