Country marks July Mass Uprising Day with nationwide state observance

The country is observing July Mass Uprising Day 2026 today (August 5) with nationwide state programmes honouring those killed and injured during the 2024 student-led movement that reshaped the country's political landscape.

To mark the occasion, the President and Prime Minister issued separate messages paying tribute to the martyrs and reaffirming commitments to the ideals of democracy, justice and national unity.

Across all 64 districts, authorities are placing wreaths at July Martyrs' Memorials, while commemorative events are being held in honour of the families of those killed and participants in the uprising.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to inaugurate the July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum in the morning. Later in the day, a state reception for families of the martyrs and July fighters will be held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center, where Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmed will attend as chief guest.

The government has also organised receptions and discussion programmes in every district to commemorate the anniversary. Rare photographs and documentary footage from the uprising are being displayed on digital screens and mini-poles across Dhaka and other city corporations.

State-run and private television channels, radio stations and community broadcasters are airing special programmes, documentaries and panel discussions, while newspapers have published commemorative supplements, feature articles and literary editions marking the occasion.

Educational institutions nationwide are observing the day through discussions, essay competitions, recitation events and art contests highlighting the significance of the July Mass Uprising. Bangladeshi diplomatic missions abroad are also hosting commemorative discussions.

Special prayers and religious services are being offered at places of worship across the country. Major roads, public squares and memorial sites have been decorated with national flags, banners and festive lighting.

As part of the official observance, the government is issuing a commemorative postage stamp, while government and autonomous museums are offering free public entry. Children will also enjoy free access to government and selected private recreational facilities.

Special meals have been arranged at public hospitals, prisons, government children's homes, rehabilitation centres, disability welfare institutions, daycare facilities and shelters for vulnerable groups as part of the day's observance.
