President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for an end to politics of conflict and retaliation, urging political and social forces to move the country forward through dialogue, compromise and tolerance.

“Not violence and confrontation, but dialogue and compromise must guide the country forward,” the president said on Monday (September 7) after laying the foundation stone of Thakurgaon University.

He also urged everyone to remain vigilant so that democracy, achieved through immense sacrifices, is not lost again.

Fakhrul said the foundation stone had been laid in fulfilment of the prime minister’s commitment and that construction of the university would begin soon.

He said the institution would expand access to higher education for people in the northern region, particularly students from Thakurgaon and surrounding districts.

The foundation-laying ceremony marked the second day of Fakhrul’s two-day visit to his home district—the first official visit to Thakurgaon since he assumed the presidency.
