Couple severely burnt in gas explosion in Dhamrai
A husband and wife were seriously burned in a gas explosion in Dhamrai of Dhaka.
The explosion took place around 10:30pm at their home in Kishannagar area of Dhamrai Municipality on Tuesday night (March 10).
The victims are Sumona, 45, and her husband Badsha Mia, 55, residents of Bijoynagar neighbourhood.
The couple are currently receiving treatment at Dhaka’s National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute.
According to neighbours, a loud explosion occurred in the kitchen of their two-story house while the couple was inside, damaging windows and parts of two rooms.
Locals rescued the couple, who were found lying on the floor with severe burns. They were initially taken to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar before being referred to Dhaka for specialised care.
Sumona sustained burns over approximately 85 per cent of her body, while Badsha Mia suffered burns on about 20 per cent of his body, including both hands, doctors confirmed.
Dhamrai Fire Service and Civil Defence official Al Amin said the explosion may have resulted from a leak in the Titas gas line that accumulated inside the kitchen. "The exact cause is under investigation."
