The court has declared BNP candidate Ishraque Hossain as the winner of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) elections held on February 1, 2020.

Dhaka First Joint District Judge Md. Nurul Islam, who is in charge of the Election Tribunal, announced the verdict on Thursday (March 27).

Ishraque Hossain was present in the court when the verdict was announced.

Ishraque also became the mayor of Dhaka, similar to the post of mayor of CCC.

The order cancelled the government's gazette notification of former mayor Sheikh Fazle Nur Taposh as mayor with the boat symbol. It declared Ishraque Hossain, the candidate with the paddy sheaf symbol, as mayor.

Mayoral candidate Ishraque Hossain filed a case on March 3, 2020, seeking to cancel the DSCC election and results on charges of irregularities, corruption and inadmissibility.

A total of eight people, including the then Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda, Returning Officer Md. Abdul Baten and South City Corporation Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Nur Taposh, were made defendants in the case.

Ishraque's lawyer Taherul Islam Touhid said, "We filed a case seeking to cancel the election on charges of irregularities, corruption and inadmissibility. We applied to declare him mayor. The court ruled in our favor today. Ishraque Hossain has been declared mayor."
