Court grants 10-day remand for David Imon in two cases

A Chattogram court has granted police a total of 10 days' remand for alleged crime figure Mobarak Hossain Imon, widely known as David Imon, in separate murder and arms cases.

Judicial Magistrate Mohammad Motasim Billah approved five days' remand in a murder case and another five days in an arms case on Sunday (August 2), according to police.

Additional Superintendent of Police Kazi Md. Tarek Aziz, who oversees the Hathazari Circle, said the court also granted five-day remand for four co-accused in the arms case: Md. Mithu alias Dhama Ilias, Mohammad Shamim, Mohammad Safayet Hossain, and Al Islam Alif.

In a separate hearing on the same day, Judicial Magistrate Md. Lokman Hakim approved a police application to show Imon arrested in an extortion case filed with Hathazari Police Station.

The murder case relates to the fatal shooting of Jamal Uddin, a Jamaat-e-Islami activist, in Shahnagar under Lelang Union of Fatikchhari in January this year.

The second case involves the recovery of firearms and was filed on July 30, police said.

Imon had earlier been sent to jail on July 30 after being shown arrested in three separate cases.

Police say Imon is accused in at least 18 criminal cases, including a high-profile double murder in Chattogram. He was arrested along with three associates in the early hours of July 29 during a joint operation in the Jhumjhum area on the Narail-Jashore highway.

Chattogram Superintendent of Police Md. Masud Alam said investigators began tracking Imon's movements after gathering intelligence during the investigation into the murder of Jubo Dal leader Masud in Raozan.

He said coordinated operations involving police from multiple districts led to the arrest of Imon and his associates in Narail.

Police further claimed that information provided by the suspects after their arrest led investigators to a deserted house in Kanchannagar Union of Fatikchhari, where officers recovered a foreign-made pistol, two locally manufactured shotguns (LGs), and several other improvised firearms.

The arms recovery subsequently formed the basis of the case in which the court granted remand on Sunday.
