A Barishal court has ordered police to register a case against Gono Odhikar Parishad leaders, including Central President Nurul Haque Nur and General Secretary Rashed Khan, in connection with the vandalism of the Jatiya Party (JaPa) office in the city.

The incident took place on the night of May 31 at JaPa’s office on Fakirbari Road. According to JaPa’s district General Secretary MA Jalil, activists of Gono Odhikar Parishad allegedly attacked and vandalized the office.

Jalil, also a lawyer for the case, said party members initially went to the police to file a complaint, but it was not accepted. A written complaint was later submitted to the court, which on Thursday directed the officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station to treat it as a formal case.

The case has been filed under the Speedy Trial Act. Along with Nur and Rashed, the complaint names district President HM Shamim Reza, district General Secretary HM Hasan, city General Secretary Farhad Hossain, 25 other named individuals, and 70 to 80 unidentified activists.

Farhad Hossain responded to the development, saying: “We are not aware of any case being filed in court. However, if there is one, we will deal with it legally.”

Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman stated that no official documents had yet been received, but said they would proceed as per protocol if such documents arrive.
