Cow tying dispute at market turns deadly, one killed

A young man has been killed following a dispute over tying a cow at a cattle market in Companiganj upazila, Sylhet. At least 10 more people were injured in clashes between two villages following the incident.

The clashes broke out between residents of Khagail and Gaurinagar villages around 5:00 pm on Friday, May 22. Police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control, said Sylhet Superintendent of Police Dr Chowdhury Md Zabed Sadek.

The deceased has been identified as Abul Hossain, 32, son of Akrab Ali of Gaurinagar village. He worked as a truck driver.

According to police and locals, an argument and altercation broke out between two groups over tying a cow at the Khagail Bazar cattle market on Thursday, May 21. Following this, Abul Hossain was attacked by the opposite party around 12:30 am on Friday, his family claimed.

He was rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital with critical injuries but died while undergoing treatment on Friday afternoon. Tensions spread across the area following his death.

At least 10 people from both sides were injured in the clashes between the two villages.

Companiganj Police Station (Investigation) Officer Sujan Chandra said police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control. The situation in the area is now normal.
