A video of a crocodile grabbing a dog and dragging it underwater in the pond of Hazrat Khanjahan (RA)'s shrine in Bagerhat has gone viral on social media. Lakhs of people have watched the video and made various comments. Many are claiming that the dog was deliberately thrown in front of the crocodile. However, the shrine's keeper, security guards and eyewitnesses have told the media that this claim is completely false.

The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon (April 8). According to the people present, a dog suddenly became aggressive at the pond ghat adjacent to the shrine and bit several people, including a child. It also killed two or three chickens. Some people threw sticks to chase the dog away. Chasing the dog, it went towards the women's ghat to the main ghat and scratched the security guard on duty there, Md. Forkan Howlader. When the dog fell into the water while brushing its feet, the crocodile grabbed it and dragged it underwater. Forkan Hawlader claims that the viral video only contains this last moment.

Showing the vaccination prescription from Bagerhat District Hospital on Thursday, Forkan Hawlader said, 'The mad dog bit a few people that day. When I tried to remove the guests because of the crocodile, the dog scratched my leg as well. As soon as I tried to brush it off, the crocodile caught me.'

Bina Akhter, a shopkeeper on the banks of Dighi, said that the dog attacked a few people, including a three-year-old child, in front of her shop. She said that various false information is being spread around this incident.

What is known about the crocodile

Mehedi Hasan (Tapu), a local youth known for his friendship with the Dighi crocodile, said that the crocodile recently laid eggs on the full moon day. At this time, female crocodiles are naturally more aggressive. He said, 'It was not possible for an ordinary person to pull the dog away from the ferocious crocodile.' The shrine's servants said that currently there is only one crocodile in the pond. This is not the historical crocodile from the time of Hazrat Khan Jahan (RA). When the crocodiles in the pond became extinct, this crocodile was brought from India in 2005 and released.
