Chattogram police have arrested three members of the fugitive Sajjad Ali group, known as “Boro Sajjad,” in connection with a shooting at the residence of a local industrialist.

During the arrests, authorities also recovered an SMG, pistols, and revolvers.

The suspects—Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury (alias Iman), Mohammad Monir, and Mohammad Sayem—allegedly carried out the attack after the industrialist, Mostafizur Rahman Chowdhury, chairman of Smart Group in Chandanpura, refused to pay extortion money worth several crore taka.

The incident took place on February 28, prompting the victim to file a police case.

Chattogram City Police Additional Commissioner Wahidul Haque Chowdhury confirmed the suspects’ active involvement in the Boro Sajjad gang, including murder, robbery, extortion, and sand-lifting operations under the directives of Sajjad.

“During initial interrogation, the suspects admitted their involvement, and all three firearms used in the attack have been recovered. Ballistic tests will verify their use,” he said.

Authorities also recovered a video clip showing new recruits taking oaths in the gang from Abdul Kaiyum.

Abdul Kaiyum, a fugitive sentenced to life imprisonment in the 2000 Bahaddarhat eight-murder case, was arrested first based on intelligence from Chawk Bazar Police. Police seized a foreign-made .32 caliber revolver and nine rounds of ammunition from him.

Acting on his tip, Mohammad Monir was arrested by Pahartali police in Paltan, where a Brazilian-made Taurus 9mm pistol and a motorcycle were recovered. The pistol was reportedly looted from Double Mooring police station. Monir’s accomplice, Mohammad Sayem, was subsequently arrested in Bayezid Bustami, leading police to recover an SMG, two magazines, and 50 rounds of ammunition from a Khulshi location he indicated.

Monir and Sayem face a total of 10 cases, including murder, robbery, extortion, and firearms violations. The industrialist’s home was fired upon on the morning of March 1.
