CU postpones exams after students-locals clash
Chittagong University (CU) has postponed all departmental examinations following violent clashes between students and local residents near the campus late Saturday night (August 30).
However, academic classes will continue as scheduled.
Confirming the decision, CU Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Md. Kamal Uddin stated on Sunday morning that all exams scheduled for the day have been suspended in consideration of student safety and the overall situation.
"Further decisions will be made based on developments," he said.
The unrest began around 12:15am near gate no. 2 of the university when a female student was allegedly assaulted by a local doorman following an argument.
As the news spread, students gathered at the scene, leading to a confrontation with local residents. The situation quickly escalated into violent clashes involving brick-throwing and physical altercations.
At least 60 individuals, including students and an assistant proctor, were injured.
University authorities and police attempted to intervene but failed to contain the violence. Army personnel were later deployed and brought the situation under control by around 3:30am.
Students have accused the university administration and law enforcement of failing to take preventive measures despite repeated tensions with local residents.
