CU student files case over alleged sexual harassment on bus

A female student of Chattogram University (CU) has filed a case after allegedly being sexually harassed on a local bus bound for Khagrachhari, police said.

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon while the student was travelling home. The accused has been identified as Mohammad Jasim, a resident of the Bhujpur area in Fatikchhari upazila.

According to the complaint, the student was seated by the window when the man sitting directly behind her allegedly touched her inappropriately under the pretext of flicking cigarette ash out of the bus window. When she protested, he allegedly began verbally abusing and threatening her.

Other passengers intervened, and the accused was forced to get off the bus in Hathazari. However, when the bus later stopped at a bus stand in Fatikchhari, the man allegedly returned in a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw, boarded the bus again, and continued to harass and threaten the student.

With the assistance of fellow passengers, the bus driver and the helper, the accused was eventually detained and handed over to Fatikchhari Police Station.

The student alleged that the accused had deliberately touched her inappropriately while pretending to dispose of cigarette ash and threatened her after she objected.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rabiul Alam Khan of Fatikchhari Police Station confirmed that a case has been filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, adding that legal proceedings are underway.
