An assistant professor of University of Chittagong (CU) was released after being confined at the university’s proctorial office for nearly nine hours following allegations linked to the July movement.

Hasan Muhammad Roman Shuvo of the Law Department was taken home around 9:00pm late Saturday (January 10) in a vehicle provided by the proctorial body , university officials said.

Earlier, several leaders of the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) forcibly brought him to the proctor’s office, accusing him of supporting “genocide” during the July movement. He was held there as campus authorities held talks to defuse the situation.

The discussions involved CU Pro-Vice-Chancellor Dr Shamim Uddin, proctorial body members and CUCSU representatives. The administration later decided to release the teacher.

CUCSU leaders later went to Hathazari police station to file a case, but police said cases against university teachers require approval from higher authorities.

CU Proctor Professor Hossain Shahid Sarwardi said an investigation into the allegations is ongoing and action will be taken in line with university rules.
