CUCSU election rescheduled to October 15
The Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) election has been postponed by three days. Initially scheduled for October 12, the polls will now be held on October 15.
The decision was announced following a meeting of the university's election commission on Monday afternoon. Later, at a press briefing held at the CUCSU building, Member Secretary of the commission, Prof. A.K.M. Ariful Haque Siddique, confirmed the revised date.
According to Prof. Siddique, the change comes in response to concerns raised during a dialogue with candidates and students. Many had argued that the four-day window for campaigning—following the publication of the final candidate list—was insufficient. “Considering the feedback, the commission unanimously decided to shift the voting date to October 15,” he said.
All examinations scheduled between October 12 and 18 have been postponed, though regular classes will continue as usual. Additionally, the deadline for withdrawing nomination papers has been extended by one day, now set for tomorrow. As of 2pm Monday, seven candidates have withdrawn their nominations citing personal reasons. The rest of the election schedule remains unchanged.
The decision follows growing tensions on campus, including recent demonstrations by student panels and a siege of the Vice-Chancellor’s residence on Sunday. Five student panels, including the Chhatra Dal, had demanded a change in schedule, citing the Puja holidays and limited campaigning time.
Meanwhile, the Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RAKSU) election has also been rescheduled. Originally set for September 25, voting will now take place on October 16.
