CUCSU leaders allegedly drag pro-AL teacher to proctor’s office at CU
CUCSU leaders allegedly dragged a pro-Awami teacher to the proctor’s office during CU’s law faculty admission test. The incident triggered turmoil across the campus.
The incident occurred during the first-year undergraduate admission test at the Faculty of Law on Saturday, January 10, around 12 PM, .
The teacher involved is Assistant Professor Hasan Mohammad Roman of the Law Department, who was serving as an examiner at the time.
According to eyewitnesses, CUCSU leaders gathered in front of the Dean’s office, raising objections to Professor Roman’s presence. When he tried to leave the area, they allegedly took him to the proctor’s office.
A video circulating on social media shows several individuals grabbing Professor Roman and forcibly placing him into a rickshaw, which then headed toward the proctor’s office.
Fazle Rabbi, CUCSU’s Secretary for Law and Human Rights, alleged that during the July uprising, several teachers at Chittagong University had taken a stance against students, and the Assistant Professor of the Law Faculty was among them. He claimed that during the Awami League government, the professor, while serving as Assistant Proctor, played a role in filing cases against students participating in democratic movements.
He further accused the teacher of calling students to his home to make them consume drugs and of turning the Shah Amanat Hall into a center of influence for the Awami League and CFC while serving as a hall tutor.
Abdullah Al Noman, CUCSU’s Office Secretary, said that during their inspection of the Law Faculty, they received news of the incident. When the professor saw them present, he ran toward the back of the gallery, fell, and was injured; no one had physically harmed him.
However, Assistant Professor Hasan Mohammad Roman denied the allegations, saying that there was a deliberate attempt to expose him to a “mob.” While he was in the examination hall, staff and other teachers informed him that the situation was unsafe. When he stepped out, CUCSU leaders began shouting, and in his panic, he ran and got injured.
He added that during the July uprising, he did not step outside even for a single day. He held no official responsibilities and did not participate in any silent marches. While serving as Assistant Proctor, he did not file any cases against anyone.
Regarding the matter, Proctor Hossain Shahid Sarwardi said that, according to the information he received, no mob had targeted the professor. However, due to the professor’s previous association with the fallen government, he was fearful of being exposed to a mob, which is why he tried to flee.
