After more than three decades, Chittagong University is on the brink of reviving its long-dormant student union, with the schedule for the Chittagong University Central Students' Union (CUCSU) elections likely to be announced by Thursday, August 28.

University officials say preparations for the long-awaited polls are nearly complete.

“We are ready to announce the polls schedule by Thursday,” said Prof Kamal Uddin, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) of CU. “Very soon, students will know the exact date of the election.”

Prof AKM Ariful Haque Siddique, member secretary of the CUCSU election conducting committee, added that the draft of the electoral code of conduct has already been prepared. “The schedule may be declared by the end of this week,” he said.

Meanwhile, CUCSU Chief Election Commissioner Prof Monir Uddin confirmed that the electoral code will be made public shortly, and the voter list is close to finalisation.

The upcoming CUCSU election holds historical significance for the university community. The first election was held in 1970, but despite being mandated as an annual exercise, it has only been conducted six times. The last CUCSU election was held on February 8, 1990.

Students across the campus have expressed cautious optimism as the university takes steps toward restoring student representation after a 34-year gap.
