CUET appoints Professor Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem as new Vice-Chancellor
Professor Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem of the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of the Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET).
The appointment was announced in a gazette notification issued on Monday (July 27) by the Engineering Universities Branch of the Secondary and Higher Education Division under the Ministry of Education.
According to the notification, signed by Joint Secretary Kazi Nurul Islam, the appointment was made with the approval of the President, who also serves as the Chancellor of the university, under Section 10(1) of the Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology Act, 2003.
Under the terms of the appointment, Professor Sayem will serve as Vice-Chancellor for four years from the date he assumes office, or until his retirement—whichever comes first. In his ex-officio capacity, he will receive the salary and benefits attached to the post and will be entitled to other government facilities in accordance with existing rules.
As the university's chief executive officer, he will be required to remain stationed on the CUET campus on a full-time basis. The notification also states that the President, acting as Chancellor, reserves the authority to revoke the appointment at any time if deemed necessary.
Professor Sayem succeeds Professor Mahmud Abdul Matin Bhuiyan, who was appointed Vice-Chancellor on October 30, 2024.
Bhuiyan, then Head of the Department of Nuclear Engineering and a professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, served in the role for nearly one year and nine months before the latest administrative change at the university.
