Culture, creativity essential alongside education for student development: Barrister Shukla

There is no alternative to cultural and creative activities alongside education for the intellectual and mental development of students, said Barrister Sarwat Siraj Shukla, president of the governing body of Kalihati Shahjahan Siraj College and president of the Women's Sports Association.

She made the remarks while addressing as chair at a discussion meeting and cultural programme organised on the occasion of the 47th founding anniversary of Kalihati Shahjahan Siraj College in Tangail on Thursday, August 27.

Sarwat Siraj Shukla said cultural practice and creative activities alongside education play an important role in shaping students into confident, humane and patriotic citizens. To develop young people as skilled human resources, emphasis must be placed on knowledge, morality, human values and creative practice.

Recalling the history of the college's establishment, she said the late former minister Shahjahan Siraj had applied for land, following which then President Ziaur Rahman donated 7 acres of land for the college in 1979. The institution was subsequently established.

Kalihati Upazila Executive Officer Farzana Akhtar spoke as the opener of the programme, emphasising the importance of developing students as skilled human resources. Speakers at the event also demanded the early nationalisation of the college.

Rabeya Siraj, a donor member of the college, was virtually present at the programme. Also present were Principal Md Mojibur Rahman, guardian representatives Arif Siddiqui and Jony Rahman, along with teachers, students, guardians and local dignitaries.

Following the discussion meeting, a cultural programme was held with participation from the students.
