Cumilla woman gets life sentence for killing father-in-law

A woman named Taslima Akter has been given a life sentence for killing her father-in-law in Laksam upazila of Cumilla.

The verdict was given on Thursday (June 19) by Judge Mosammat Farida Yasmin of the Cumilla Additional District and Sessions Judge Court No. 5.

According to the case details, Taslima Akter’s husband, Md. Bilal Hossain, was working in Dhaka at the time of the incident. During his absence, Taslima became involved in multiple extramarital affairs. When her father-in-law, Md. Chan Mia, confronted her about the matter, she became enraged.

On the night of July 11, 2014, Taslima attacked her father-in-law while he was asleep. She severed his genitals and fatally stabbed him with a sharp knife. The following day, she surrendered to Laksam Police Station.

After hearing the testimonies of 12 witnesses, the court sentenced Taslima Akter to life imprisonment and fined her Tk50,000. If she fails to pay the fine, she will have to serve an additional six months in prison.
