Curfew temporarily relaxed in Gopalganj, extended indefinitely
Authorities temporarily relaxed the ongoing curfew in Gopalganj on Friday, allowing a three-hour window from 11.00am to 2.00pm for residents to move about.
The curfew, imposed following deadly clashes surrounding a National Citizens Party (NCP) rally on Wednesday, has since been extended indefinitely.
During the brief relaxation, traffic and public movement increased significantly in the city. Auto-rickshaws, private vehicles, and motorcycles returned to the roads, particularly in key areas like Launch Ghat. Some roadside shops reopened, though the main markets remained largely closed.
The curfew was initially enforced on Wednesday night after clashes erupted between NCP supporters and alleged activists of the Awami League and its affiliates, including the Chhatra League. Four people died from gunshot wounds during the violence, and a fifth victim, Ramzan Munshi, died Thursday night at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Despite the temporary reprieve, law enforcement personnel continued active patrols across the city to maintain order.
Local traders, especially those dealing in perishable goods, reported significant financial losses due to the prolonged shutdown. "Around Tk 30,000 worth of fruit has gone bad in three days," said Alamgir Hossain, a vendor in the Launch Ghat area. "Three hours of business is not enough. We need stability to resume normal trade."
Officials have not announced when the curfew will be fully lifted, as security forces remain on high alert amid ongoing tensions.
