The Doctors' Association of Bangladesh (DAB) has strongly condemned recent remarks made by Jamaat-e-Islami central Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, labelling them as "derogatory" and "misleading" toward the medical profession.

In a joint statement, DAB President Dr. Harun Al Rashid and Secretary General Dr. Md Zahirul Islam Shakil expressed outrage over Taher’s claim that doctors "take money from pharmaceutical companies, which raises treatment costs by 20%." The association called the statement an insult to the entire medical community.

"This kind of sweeping allegation not only disrespects the dedication of doctors but also sows public distrust in the healthcare system," the statement read. "Such remarks may drive patients to seek treatment abroad, ultimately harming the national healthcare infrastructure."

The DAB leadership has demanded that Taher immediately retract his statement, warning that continued rhetoric of this nature could demoralize the nation’s medical professionals.

Citing the vital role of doctors during national crises—including during the "July uprising"—DAB underscored the sacrifices made by medical professionals, who continue to serve despite significantly lower salaries than their counterparts in neighbouring countries.

The organization reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the dignity of the medical profession and improving the country’s healthcare system. "We stand united with the wider medical community against any attempt to undermine our profession," the statement added.
