Dancing, TikTok used as grounds to block woman's burial in Chuadanga
A woman's burial was opposed in Chuadanga allegedly because she was involved in dancing, singing and making TikTok videos. Following intervention by police and local administration, the situation was brought under control, and her burial was completed at night.
The incident took place on Thursday afternoon, May 14, in the South Daulatdiar area of Chuadanga Sadar upazila. The burial remained stalled for several hours due to objections from some locals. She was finally buried at the Jannatul Baqi graveyard around 10:00 pm.
Family sources said Subarna Akter, 35, was found hanging at her rented flat in Jhenaidah town on Wednesday night. She lived there with her husband. After an autopsy on Thursday morning, when her body was brought to her home village in the afternoon, opposition to the burial arose.
Locals alleged that Subarna had long been involved in dancing, singing and making TikTok videos. She would dance at various events, and her activities on social media drew criticism in the area. Some locals also raised various allegations against her family and opposed her burial in the local graveyard.
Subarna's stepfather, Israel Hossain, denied the allegations. "Our other family members have been buried here before. This time, even digging the grave was opposed," he said.
Later, following discussions in the presence of police, administration officials and local journalists, the situation was resolved.
Chuadanga Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman said police were sent to the spot upon receiving information. The situation was normalised through administrative mediation, and the burial was later completed.
According to family information, Subarna had two daughters and a son from her first husband. About six years ago, she started a new family after marital discord.
