A dawn-to-dusk hartal (general strike) is underway in Bagerhat on Monday, called by local political groups demanding the reinstatement of four parliamentary constituencies in the district. The strike has severely disrupted transportation and public life across the region.

Supporters of the hartal locked the main gate of the Bagerhat District Election Office early this morning, effectively halting regular operations. In response, law enforcement personnel have been deployed around key government buildings, including the election office, the Deputy Commissioner’s office, and the district judge’s court, to maintain security.

Long-distance buses and transport services remain suspended since morning, with 16 major routes affected. Commuters have been left stranded, facing increased fares for the limited number of battery-operated rickshaws and vans still operating in the city.

A visit to various key points in the town including the Central Bus Terminal, Dashani Intersection, Khan Jahan Ali Shrine Intersection, Muniganj Bridge, and Dartana Bridge Toll Plaza revealed deserted streets and shuttered shops. Only a handful of small vehicles were seen moving.

Speaking to reporters, Fakir Tarikul Hasan, former president of the Bagerhat Jubo Dal, said, “Reducing the number of constituencies is against public interest. We are protesting this decision through a peaceful hartal, and people are spontaneously supporting our cause.”
