Sheikh Mamun Khaled, former Director General of the Defence Intelligence Agency (DGFI) and retired Lieutenant General, has been arrested by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

He was detained from an area in the capital late on Wednesday night, March 25. DB officials said he has been taken into custody for questioning regarding various allegations against him.

According to intelligence sources and DB officials, investigations were underway into multiple serious allegations against Sheikh Mamun Khaled. These include involving DGFI in political activities, his controversial role during the army-backed caretaker government of 2007-08 (known as the 1/11 era), and irregularities in the Jalshiri housing project. Sources have confirmed that legal proceedings have been initiated based on these allegations.

Earlier in May last year, the court had imposed a travel ban on Sheikh Mamun Khaled and his wife Nigar Sultana following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). At that time, the ACC had stated it was investigating financial irregularities and acquisition of illegal assets against them.

Sheikh Mamun Khaled served as Director of the Counter Intelligence Bureau (CIB) of DGFI during the caretaker government of 2007-08. He later served as Director General of DGFI from 2011 to 2013.
