DBCCI expresses concern over cargo terminal fire, urges swift action
The Dutch-Bangla Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DBCCI) has expressed deep concern over the devastating fire at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport cargo terminal on October 18, calling it a major blow to the country’s trade and logistics sector.
In a statement, the chamber extended sympathy to those injured or affected and said the incident has disrupted import-export operations and supply chains, causing an estimated loss of nearly USD 1 billion.
DBCCI noted that the fire exposed serious weaknesses in the country’s commercial infrastructure, including limited fire safety measures, unsafe storage of flammable goods, and poor coordination among relevant agencies.
The chamber urged the Civil Aviation Authority (CAAB) and the Aviation Ministry to release the event timeline, preliminary investigation, and support contact points for affected businesses.
It also called for fast insurance settlements, expedited clearance of undamaged cargo, and the use of additional flights or routes to ease the backlog.
Emphasizing preventive measures, DBCCI demanded an independent technical audit of airport fire safety systems and the creation of alternative cargo hubs to maintain trade continuity.
“The fire serves as a wake-up call on preparedness and infrastructure safety,” DBCCI said, adding that it is ready to work with the government, CAAB, and freight stakeholders for a rapid recovery.
