Deadline extended for probe into NCP rally attack in Gopalganj
The government has extended the deadline for the inquiry commission investigating the July attack on the National Citizen Party (NCP) rally in Gopalganj.
The new deadline for submitting the report is September 30, according to a Cabinet Division notification issued on Thursday (September 4).
This marks the second extension of the commission's timeline.
Initially formed on July 24 under the Commission of Inquiry Act 1956 and headed by former Supreme Court Justice Dr Md Abu Tariq, the commission was first given a three-week deadline, later extended by 14 days. The latest 34-day extension came into effect from August 28.
The six-member commission includes senior officials from the judiciary, military, police, and academia. It has been tasked with identifying the causes of the violence, determining those responsible, and recommending legal action.
The scope of the probe also includes attacks on government establishments, including the district jail, and an assessment of the impact on public security.
The commission is expected to propose measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Public Security Division under the Ministry of Home Affairs is providing logistical and administrative support to the commission.
