Keraniganj fire death toll rises to 6
The death toll in a massive fire at a gas lighter factory in Dhaka's Kadamtali area of Keraniganj has risen to 6. Another body has been recovered from the rubble after the fire was brought under control.
The last body was recovered at 12:02am on Saturday. Fire Service Media Cell Inspector Md. Anwarul Islam confirmed the matter.
According to fire service sources, the control room was informed about the fire at 1:11pm on Saturday. Seven units of the fire service quickly reached the spot and started working to control the fire. The fire was brought under control at around 2:30pm after about an hour and a half of effort.
After the fire was brought under control, the burnt bodies of five people were initially recovered from the scene. Later, another body was recovered at night, raising the death toll to 6. At least 15 people were injured in the incident.
The fire service said the bodies were so badly burned that it was not immediately possible to identify the victims or whether they were male or female.
A five-member investigation committee headed by Lieutenant Colonel Md. Mahmudul Hasan, Director of the Operations and Maintenance Department of the Fire Service and Civil Defense Department, has been formed to investigate the cause of the incident. The committee has been directed to submit a report within seven working days.
