Deep depression over Bay puts four seaports under signal no. 3

The low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a well-marked low over the northwest Bay and adjoining Odisha-West Bengal coast, prompting the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) to hoist Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 at all four maritime ports.

According to the BMD, the system may intensify further, with squally weather expected over the northern Bay of Bengal, coastal areas and adjoining maritime zones.

As a precaution, Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports have been advised to continue displaying Local Cautionary Signal No. 3. All fishing boats and trawlers operating in the northern Bay have been instructed to remain close to the coast and navigate with extreme caution until further notice.

The Met Office also forecast temporary gusty or squally winds of 45–60 km/h, accompanied by rain or thundershowers, over Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Chattogram and Cox's Bazar.

River ports in these regions have been asked to display Warning Signal No. 1 from 9:00am to 6:00pm.

Meteorologist Md Tariful Newaz Kabir said the axis of the monsoon extends from the well-marked low across southern Bangladesh to Assam. While the monsoon remains moderately active over Bangladesh, it is strong over the northern Bay of Bengal, increasing the likelihood of widespread rainfall across the country over the next five days.

The weather office has urged coastal residents, fishermen and maritime operators to remain vigilant and follow all subsequent advisories.
