State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam alleged that forces defeated in the 1971 Liberation War, along with allies of the previous regime, are attempting to undermine the current government on Saturday.

Speaking at a discussion and prayer meeting marking the 45th death anniversary of former President Ziaur Rahman in Faridpur's Nagarkanda upazila, Shama Obaed said those who had "oppressed, persecuted, and engaged in corruption and extortion" over the past 17 years were removed through the July mass uprising, but their associates continue to conspire against the government.

"Those who were defeated in 1971 are also trying to raise their heads again in various ways," she said.

The event was organized by the local BNP unit at the M.N. Academy grounds.

The state minister said forces opposed to the Zia family since 1971 remain enemies of democracy and continue efforts to destabilize Bangladesh.

"We must confront these conspiracies at any cost," she said.

Paying tribute to Ziaur Rahman, Shama Obaed credited him with helping transform Bangladesh into a self-reliant state and laying the foundation for economic development, industrialization and overseas employment.

She also praised former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia for her role in anti-autocracy movements, describing her as an uncompromising political leader.

Reviewing the current government's performance, Shama Obaed said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has been working in line with Ziaur Rahman's ideals by expanding education, healthcare and economic opportunities, as well as implementing canal excavation and family card programmes across the country.

Several local BNP leaders, including former Nagarkanda BNP president Habibur Rahman Babul Talukdar and former Saltha BNP president Siddiqur Rahman Talukdar, attended the event.
