Demand for annulment of MP Nazrul's membership, Tawhidi Janta announces tough programmes

A human chain was held demanding the cancellation of the membership and resignation of Gazi Nazrul Islam, Member of Parliament for the Satkhira-4 constituency, following the circulation of a private video on social media .

The programme was held on Thursday (23 July) afternoon at the Shyamnagar Press Club premises under the banner of 'Ulama-e-Keram and Tawhidi Janta from all walks of life'. Speakers at the human chain alleged that Gazi Nazrul Islam was involved in multiple immoral activities. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has expelled him from the party after the video of his private moments surfaced on social media. However, they demanded that the party expulsion alone is not enough and that swift action should be taken to remove him from his parliamentary seat .

Speaking on behalf of the Ulama, Mufti Maulana Abdul Qayyum said such behaviour from a public representative is not expected in any way. He claimed the incident has tarnished the image of the Ulema and the general public in Shyamnagar and across the country. He also called upon the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad to take necessary constitutional action .

Mufti Maulana Abdullah Al Mamun, Hafez Labib Hasan Nahid, Hafez Monirul Islam and other local religious leaders also spoke at the human chain. The speakers warned that if Gazi Nazrul Islam's parliamentary membership is not revoked, stricter programmes will be announced in the future.

Meanwhile, after the video went viral, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami expelled Gazi Nazrul Islam from the party on Wednesday . On Thursday, the party informed the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad and the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of its decision through letters and requested necessary measures to be taken .

In a letter from Jamaat, it was stated that the organisational investigation found evidence of allegations of moral misconduct against Gazi Nazrul Islam, leading to his expulsion under Article 62 of the party's constitution. The decision was made at an emergency meeting of the party's central executive council on 22 July.

Notably, multiple videos of Gazi Nazrul Islam's private moments circulated on social media on Monday night. Later, in a post on his Facebook page, he claimed that the woman in the video was his second wife, Mariam Begum. He stated that they were married on 17 June with the consent of his first wife in a family ceremony.
