BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has said democracy in Bangladesh will remain at risk until a government truly accountable to the people is established.

Speaking on Sunday at a discussion event marking the party’s 47th founding anniversary at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in Dhaka, Tarique said, “Democracy cannot be secured without a people’s government. Sinister and invisible forces are becoming increasingly active, while some political parties are deliberately creating obstacles to a fair election process.”

A documentary on the BNP’s political journey was also screened during the event.

Tarique emphasized that effective democratic practice, rather than superficial reforms, is key to ensuring people’s rights. “State and political reforms are necessary, but no reform will be sustainable if the people's rights are obstructed,” he said.

Addressing the current interim government, he remarked that it lacks the capacity of an accountable political administration. “This government reflects a post-authoritarian phase, but cannot deliver like a skilled and responsible government. The longer it remains in power, the more visible its weaknesses become.”

Tarique urged party leaders and activists to stay committed to BNP’s principles. “Politics is not about making empty promises. Our aim is to improve people’s lives and build a safer Bangladesh for future generations,” he said, noting that BNP has formulated several initiatives that are now in the final stages of planning.

He also cautioned about growing conspiracies ahead of the national elections and reiterated the party’s resolve: “BNP has never backed down in the fight for democracy, justice, the rule of law, and the rights of the people — and we never will.”
