Demra rickshaw driver beaten to death with brick, suspect held

A rickshaw driver was allegedly beaten to death with bricks in Dhaka’s Demra early Friday (September 4), after which local residents caught and beat the suspected attacker.

The victim, Delwar Hossain, 50, was attacked around dawn behind the mosque at Kamar Gop No. 4 Gate, police said.

According to Demra Police Station Sub-Inspector Shital Kumar, Delwar was driving a battery-powered rickshaw when he got into an argument with a known man, identified as Roni, 25, over drugs in the Kamar Gop area.

At one point, Roni allegedly struck Delwar repeatedly with a brick on his head and other parts of his body, killing him at the scene, the officer said.

After the incident, local residents caught Roni and beat him.

Police rescued him from the scene and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition.

Police recovered Delwar’s body and sent it to the Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy.

An investigation is underway to establish the motive and determine the circumstances surrounding the killing, police said.
