Dense fog intensifies cold across Bangladesh
Cold conditions have intensified across Bangladesh as dense fog grips Dhaka and several other regions at the start of the month of Poush.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said fog may become denser over the next few days, making daytime temperatures feel lower and increasing the severity of winter. A cold wave may affect parts of the country, particularly in the north and west.
On Sunday, Dhaka remained shrouded in fog from early morning, with only brief sunshine around mid-morning. Similar conditions prevailed in many parts of the country, especially in northern districts.
According to the BMD, the lowest temperature on Sunday was recorded at 12.0°C in Rajarhat, Kurigram, followed by 12.2°C in Chuadanga. The highest temperature was recorded at 31.4°C in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.
Meteorologist Md Tarif-ul-Nawaz Kabir said fog is common in winter, but its intensity is expected to increase in the coming days. Reduced sunlight during the day means temperatures may not drop sharply, yet the cold will feel more intense. He said fog will be more persistent over Rangpur, Rajshahi and Khulna divisions, where daytime temperatures may feel 1–3°C lower. A cold wave may develop in some areas later this week.
The BMD defines a mild cold wave as minimum temperatures between 8.1°C and 10°C, a moderate cold wave between 6.1°C and 8°C, and a severe cold wave between 4.1°C and 6°C. Temperatures below 4°C are classified as a very severe cold wave.
In Rajshahi, the sun failed to appear throughout the day, leaving the area under thick fog and cold winds. Kurigram also experienced biting cold and dense fog, disrupting road and river transport. Vehicles were seen moving with headlights on, while ferry services were delayed. In Joypurhat, four consecutive days of fog and cold winds have slowed daily life and increased health concerns, particularly for children and the elderly.
The weather office said that although temperatures may not fall sharply, dense fog and cold winds are likely to make the next few days feel colder. People in northern and western regions have been advised to remain cautious.
