Depositors withdraw Tk 610 crore in two days from five merged banks

Nearly 8,000 depositors have withdrawn Tk 360 crore on the second day of deposit refund from the five merged Islamic banks. On the previous day in the first phase, 6,000 depositors had withdrawn Tk 250 crore. As a result, the withdrawal amount increased by Tk 110 crore on the second day.

This money was paid to the depositors on Tuesday (September 8). A source of Bangladesh Bank has confirmed the matter to Star News. On the same day, depositors have applied for withdrawal of another around Tk 400 crore.

The government has formed Sammilito Islami Bank by merging Exim Bank, First Security Islami Bank, Social Islami Bank, Union Bank and Global Islami Bank. Recently the activities and responsibilities of these banks have been handed over to the new bank.

Sammilito Islami Bank started accepting applications for deposit refund of the merged banks from September 1 last. Until September 6, a total of 74,221 depositors have applied for withdrawal of Tk 3,925 crore.

Among the applicants, 24,428 have applied for one-time full deposit withdrawal. The amount of money against these applications is Tk 1,388 crore.

Bangladesh Bank has given Tk 5,000 crore to Sammilito Islami Bank for payment of money to the depositors. The central bank has said this money has been arranged from the capital of the new bank.
