Detained Awami League leader dies

A detained leader of the Awami League, Ziaul Haque Zia, 55, has died while undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital on Tuesday night.


Ziaul Haque Zia, who was in custody at Jamalpur District Jail, passed away around 9:00pm after his condition deteriorated, according to prison authorities.


He was a member of the advisory council of the Jamalpur district unit of the Awami League and also served as the president of the managing committee of Digpait D.K. High School.


Sources at the jail said Ziaul Haque Zia fell ill after his blood pressure suddenly dropped on Saturday afternoon. He was initially admitted to Jamalpur General Hospital. As his condition worsened, he was transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment, where he later died.


Ziaul Haque Zia had been in custody since January 15 this year in connection with a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.


Assistant Surgeon of Jamalpur District Jail, Dr. Shamim Reza, said, 'His blood pressure dropped suddenly. He was quickly sent to Jamalpur General Hospital and later shifted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.'
