Dhaka among six city corporations get new administrators
The government has appointed new administrators for six city corporations across Bangladesh, including Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation.
The appointments were formalised through a gazette issued Sunday (February 22) by the Local Government Division, signed by Joint Secretary Mahbuba Irene under presidential order.
According to the notification, Md. Abdus Salam has been appointed administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation, while Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan will head Dhaka North City Corporation.
Other appointments include: Nazrul Islam Monju for Khulna City Corporation, Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury for Sylhet City Corporation, Md. Sakhawat Hossain Khan for Narayanganj City Corporation, and Md. Shawkat Hossain Sarkar for Gazipur City Corporation.
The gazette cites Section 25K(1) of the Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024, stating that the administrators will serve as full-time heads of their respective corporations until the formation of elected bodies or further orders.
The appointed administrators will exercise the powers and responsibilities of the mayor and receive allowances according to regulations, it added.
The order takes immediate effect in the public interest.
