Dhaka records 49mm rain in nine hours, several areas waterlogged

Dhaka recorded 49mm of rain in nine hours until 9am on Sunday (September 20), triggering waterlogging in several parts of the capital and disrupting the morning commute, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

The rain was recorded from midnight Saturday to 9am Sunday as the monsoon, which had remained relatively inactive, became active again, weather officials said.

The BMD said Narayanganj recorded the highest rainfall in the country over the past 24 hours, at 82mm.

Rain began intensifying in Dhaka around 4am, inundating roads in Tejgaon, Moghbazar, Green Road, Panthapath, Agargaon, Nayapaltan, Fakirapul, Arambagh, Shapla Chattar and areas around Notre Dame College.

The prolonged downpour caused considerable inconvenience to office-goers and students on the first working day of the week.

Meteorologist Shahinul Islam said intermittent rain could continue in the capital for some time on Sunday, while rainfall may decrease or cease from Monday.
