Dhaka to set up 26 cattle markets ahead of Eid-ul-Azha
A total of 26 cattle markets will be set up across the capital ahead of Eid al-Azha, with 13 each under the Dhaka South and Dhaka North city corporations.
According to city corporation sources, most of the markets have already been leased. Trading will officially continue for five days, including Eid day, though informal activity often begins four to five days earlier.
The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) will operate 12 temporary cattle markets at designated open spaces, vacant plots and roadside areas across the city.
Key locations include land beside the Postogola crematorium along the Buriganga River, both sides of Dholaikhal road near Sadek Hossain Khoka Field, North Shahjahanpur Maitree Sangha Club area, Rahmatganj Club, Amulia Model Town, and sections of Aftabnagar.
Markets will also be set up along the Shyampur–Kadamtali truck stand road, Kajla Bridge to Matuail route near Mridha Bari water pump, Dayaganj to Jurain rail crossings, Banasree’s Mostamaji Mor area, and near Golapbag staff quarters.
The permanent Sarulia cattle market will remain closed this year following land acquisition by the Water Development Board, DSCC officials said.
The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) will operate 12 temporary markets alongside the permanent Gabtoli cattle market.
Temporary sites include areas under the elevated expressway near Khilkhet Bazar, Mirpur Section 6 Eastern Housing, Kalshi Balur Math, Merul Badda kitchen market, Dhaka Polytechnic Institute area, East Hajipara’s Iqra Madrasa vicinity and a 40-foot road in Mohammadpur.
Other locations include Diabari (Sectors 16 and 18 of Uttara), routes from Bhatulia Saheb Ali Madrasa to Ranabhola sluice gate, Rahman Nagar near Kanchkura Bazar, Mastul Checkpost area and the Sutibhola canal zone in Bhatara.
DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam warned that strict action will be taken against any unauthorized or premature market setup.
DNCC Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan said measures have been taken to ensure orderly management and prevent public inconvenience, adding that leasing is being conducted transparently through open tenders with scope for appeals.
City authorities said enhanced monitoring will be in place throughout the Eid cattle trading period to ensure discipline and public safety.
