Dhaka’s first six-lane railway underpass opens in TT Para
The capital’s first six-lane railway underpass has been opened at TT Para near Kamalapur Railway Station in Dhaka.
The underpass was inaugurated on Saturday November 8 morning by the Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant on Defence and National Solidarity Development Lieutenant General Abdus Hafiz, retired. Chief Adviser’s another Special Assistant Sheikh Moin Uddin was also present at the event.
The matter was confirmed to the media by Project Director Brigadier General Ahmed Jamiul Islam. He said, “This is the first railway underpass in Dhaka with separate lanes for pedestrians, bicycles and rickshaws. The 338-metre-long and 31-metre-wide underpass was constructed under the Padma Bridge Rail Link Project.”
He further said, “Four of the underpass’s lanes are designated for motorised vehicles such as buses, trucks, microbuses and pickups, while the remaining two lanes are for non-motorised vehicles including rickshaws, vans and bicycles. Footpaths have also been built for pedestrians.”
With the opening of the underpass, long-standing traffic congestion and suffering have come to an end. The problem of vehicles getting stuck for long periods at train crossings on the connecting roads between Motijheel and Mugda, Manda, Maniknagar and Sabujbagh will now be resolved.
Officials concerned said that regular maintenance of the underpass will be ensured. However, they mentioned that the full benefit of the underpass will be realised only after the construction of the Kamalapur Metro Rail Station is completed.
