Dhanmondi 32 sealed off as security tightens on August 15

Security has been tightened around Dhanmondi 32 and adjoining areas in Dhaka on Saturday (August 15) as the country marks the 51st death anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Additional police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel were deployed in the area from early morning, while the main entrance to Dhanmondi 32 was sealed with barricades. A water cannon was also kept ready to deal with any possible deterioration of the law and order situation.

No Awami League leaders or activists were seen gathering at the site or laying flowers during the morning, according to reports from the area.

Security personnel said no untoward incident had been reported by morning. Authorities, however, have maintained heightened surveillance across the neighbourhood, particularly around the western entrance to Road 32.

Movement of members of the public has also been restricted, with people not being allowed to enter the Dhanmondi 32 premises.

The heightened security comes amid a changed political environment following the July-August mass uprising of 2024. The residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi 32 was vandalised and set on fire after the uprising, causing extensive damage to the building. Public access to the area has remained restricted since then.
