DIG Shafiqul Islam has been appointed as the new Additional Commissioner of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), filling a position that had remained vacant for over four months.

The role had been unoccupied since April 12, when then-DB chief Rezaul Karim Mallik was relieved of his duties without any specific reason. Mallik was later transferred to the post of DIG of the Dhaka Range. Since then, a Joint Commissioner had been overseeing the DB unit on an interim basis.

DIG Shafiqul Islam, a native of Sariakandi upazila in Bogura, joined the police force in 1999 as part of the 18th BCS Police Cadre after completing his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Rajshahi University.

He began his career as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Lakshmipur and later served as an Assistant Commissioner (AC) in Chattogram Metropolitan Police. In 2002, he was transferred to the DB in Dhaka, where he served for nearly five years.

Shafiqul Islam has held a range of positions throughout his career, including a posting at the Sardah Police Academy as Additional SP (Training) and multiple deployments to UN peacekeeping missions in Liberia and Ivory Coast.

He also served as Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police and later as Superintendent of Police in the Highway Police and River Police units. In 2021, he was promoted to Additional DIG (Admin & Operations) in the River Police before eventually taking on the role of DIG in the Highway Police.

With a career spanning over two decades, DIG Shafiqul brings a wealth of experience in intelligence, operations, and international peacekeeping to his new role as the head of one of the most critical units in DMP.
