Discussion on new pancreatic stone removal method held at BSMMU
A scientific seminar and special discussion meeting on the 'Shahid Method' invented for pancreatic stone removal was held at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).
The discussion, titled ‘Shahid Method for Pancreatic Stone Removal’, was held at the university auditorium in collaboration with ACI Pharmaceuticals on Sunday (January 5).
At the discussion, Professor Dr Shahidur Rahman, inventor of the method, presented the details about the 'Shahid Method'.
Dr Rahman said, “The pancreas is an important part of the digestive system. Enzymes for digestion and insulin for controlling diabetes are produced in the pancreas. Infections, stones, tumors, and cancer are formed in the pancreas. Stones in the pancreas are usually more common in areas where there is more heat.”
He said, "I have discovered a new method to remove these pancreas stones. I have performed a total of 211 surgeries until December 2024. I have successfully presented this method in Japan, Indonesia, Germany, USA, and Brazil. This new method has brightened the image of Bangladesh in the world."
Rahman said, “This method takes less time to treat and there is very little bleeding. There are no complications, and the death rate is zero. The old method has a pain relief rate of only 60 to 70 percent, while the pain relief rate of this Shahid method is 96 percent.”
He said the rate of this disease is high among those who drink alcohol. The symptoms of the disease are abdominal pain, nausea, loss of appetite, and weight loss. However, the intensity of the pain is so high that normal activities stop.
BSMMU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Abul Kalam Azad was present as a special guest at the discussion addressed by Professor Dr Mohsin Chowdhury as the special discussant. The event was hosted by Dr Sarwar Ahmed Sobhan.
