DMC students issue 24hr ultimatum to Health Adviser over unsafe dormitories
Amid ongoing protests demanding safe accommodation, students of Dhaka Medical College (DMC) have issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Health Adviser, urging him to visit and inspect the college dormitories in person. They warned that failure to act would lead to tougher demonstrations, and they would no longer comply with the administration's directive to vacate the halls.
The announcement came on Sunday at 12:30 PM, following a meeting between student representatives and the college principal.
Speaking to reporters at Milon Chattar after the meeting, the students expressed deep frustration, claiming that they have been forced to live in hazardous, decaying dormitories while authorities continue to sidestep the issue.
"We've been demanding safe housing for a long time. The current condition of our halls is dangerous, and everyone has seen it," said Abdullah Al Noman, a fourth-year student and resident of Dr. Fazle Rabbi Hall. "Today’s meeting provided no clear commitment—just repeated instructions to vacate the dorms."
Noman added that they are calling on the Health Adviser to visit the campus by 12 PM on June 23, along with his delegation, to meet with students and provide a concrete solution. "Otherwise, we will escalate our protest," he said.
Students also criticized a recent notice that ordered them to vacate the halls, arguing that it lacks any mention of renovation or repair work.
"This notice seems to be a tactic to silence our protest. Since there’s no renovation happening, we’re not leaving either," said Noman.
"These buildings could collapse at any time. If something happens, the responsibility will fall on the Health Adviser, because inaction now would be nothing short of negligence."
The students reiterated that their movement is not just about protest—but about survival.
