DMP arrests 418 in 24-hour crackdown, seizes firearms, drugs and ammunition

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 418 people in a series of operations across the capital over the past 24 hours, while filing 65 criminal cases in connection with a range of offences, police said on Wednesday (August 5).

According to a DMP statement, the highest number of arrests was made in the Mirpur Division, where 135 suspects were detained. The remaining arrests included 57 in Tejgaon, 48 in Motijheel, 43 in Lalbagh, 42 in Wari, 40 in Uttara, 30 in Gulshan and 23 in Ramna.

During the operations, police recovered three foreign-made pistols, five magazines and 38 rounds of ammunition, along with a Chinese axe, a switch gear device and fragments of an exploded cocktail bomb.

The crackdown also led to the seizure of 4,439 yaba tablets and 1.11 kilograms of cannabis, in addition to various items believed to be linked to criminal activities.

Among the other recovered items were two shoulder bags, three walkie-talkies, two chargers, a Hiace microbus, nine mobile phones, 372 SIM cards, three packs of playing cards, two old cheque books, cash worth Tk 24,850, and two individuals who were rescued during the operations, according to the statement.

Police said the raids were carried out in multiple police station jurisdictions across Dhaka as part of routine operations targeting crime, adding that legal proceedings against those arrested are underway.
