DMP arrests 485 in 24-hour crime crackdown across Dhaka

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 485 people in a 24-hour special operation across the capital as part of an intensified drive to curb crime.

The operation, conducted across the city’s eight police divisions and separately by the Detective Branch (DB), also led to the seizure of drugs, weapons and cash. A total of 50 cases have been filed against those arrested, according to DMP sources.

Mirpur recorded the highest number of arrests, with 125 people detained during the operation. Police arrested 77 in Tejgaon, 57 each in Motijheel and Gulshan, 49 in Uttara, 46 in Wari, 34 in Lalbagh and 31 in Ramna. The DB separately arrested nine people.

Police seized 4,295 yaba tablets and 610 grams of cannabis during the operation. They also recovered eight mobile phones, Tk 124,000 in cash and several weapons allegedly used in robbery and mugging, including three knives, three iron pipes, a cutter and an iron rod.

Niaz Mehedi, additional deputy commissioner of DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, said such operations would continue as part of efforts to strengthen security across the capital.

Legal proceedings against those arrested are underway, he added.
